The Mallakas, a group within the republican union known as the Samgha, formed an alliance with the Licchhavis primarily for self-defense purposes. This strategic partnership was aimed at countering external threats and maintaining their autonomy in a politically volatile environment. However, despite their efforts to unite against common adversaries, the alliance ultimately did not succeed in preserving their independence. Following the death of Buddha, the political landscape shifted significantly, leading to the annexation of the Mallakas' territories by the expanding Magadhan empire. This transition marked a critical turning point in the region's history, as the Mallakas and Licchavis lost their political sovereignty and were absorbed into a larger imperial structure. The annexation not only diminished the power of these smaller republics but also contributed to the centralization of authority under the Magadhan rule, which had lasting implications for the governance and cultural dynamics of the area.
