During World War II, Liechtenstein faced significant internal and external pressures. Among these pressures was the rise of the German National Movement in Liechtenstein (VDBL). The VDBL sought to align the region closer to Nazi Germany, reflecting political tensions prevalent in Europe at that time. Concerned by the possibility of VDBL securing seats in the Landtag—Liechtenstein's parliamentary body—the Progressive Citizens' Party and Patriotic Union took a collaborative stance. Both parties requested Prince Franz Joseph II to intervene.
In response, Prince Franz Joseph II chose to extend the government's term indefinitely. This definitive action aimed to stabilize the political landscape of Liechtenstein and prevent potential influence by the VDBL. By extending the government's tenure, the Prince effectively curbed the VDBL's opportunity to gain political power during a period of heightened instability.
This decision was a strategic move to maintain the neutrality and sovereignty of Liechtenstein. It ensured that the existing political structure remained intact and that pro-German sentiments did not gain a foothold in the country's governance during wartime.
