The death of Moshoeshoe I on 11 March 1870 marked a significant turning point in the history of Basutoland, ushering in the colonial era. Following his death, Basutoland was annexed by the Cape Colony in 1871, a move that was met with considerable resistance from the Basotho people. During the period from 1871 to 1884, Basutoland was subjected to the same colonial policies as other forcibly annexed territories, leading to widespread humiliation and discontent among the Basotho. This discontent culminated in the Basuto Gun War of 1880-1881, a conflict that arose from the Basotho's struggle to reclaim their autonomy and resist colonial oppression. In 1884, after the war and ongoing tensions, Basutoland was officially designated as a Crown colony, further entrenching colonial rule in the region. The legacy of Moshoeshoe I and the subsequent colonial experiences have had a lasting impact on the identity and history of the Basotho people. #mooflife #mof #MomentOfLife #MoshoeshoeI #Basutoland #ColonialHistory #BasutoGunWar #CapeColony
