The Battle of Marj Dabiq occurred between the Ottoman Empire and the Mamluk Sultanate, marking a crucial event in Middle Eastern history. The Ottoman Empire, under the leadership of Sultan Selim I, sought to expand its territorial control and solidify its power in the region. The Mamluk Sultanate, which governed a significant area including modern-day Egypt, the Levant, and parts of Arabia, was seen as an obstacle to Ottoman ambitions.
Sultan Selim I had already strengthened his position in Anatolia and aimed to neutralize the Mamluk threat to secure the Ottoman Empire's eastern flank. The confrontation culminated in a decisive battle held on the plains of Marj Dabiq, near Aleppo, in present-day northern Syria. The Ottoman forces, characterized by disciplined infantry and an effective artillery corps, faced the Mamluk army which relied heavily on its traditional cavalry tactics.
The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Ottomans. The Ottoman forces, estimated at around 60,000 troops, utilized superior military technology and strategic planning to outmaneuver the Mamluk army, which numbered approximately 40,000. Key to the Ottoman success was the use of artillery, which devastated Mamluk formations and led to the disintegration of their lines.
The defeat of the Mamluks at Marj Dabiq paved the way for the Ottoman conquest of the Mamluk territories. Subsequently, the Ottomans captured Aleppo, Damascus, and eventually Cairo, effectively ending the Mamluk Sultanate's rule. This victory not only expanded the Ottoman Empire's boundaries but also shifted the balance of power in the region, bringing new territories under Ottoman control.
The battle had far-reaching consequences, including the consolidation of Ottoman authority over the Levant and Egypt and the establishment of Ottoman hegemony in the Middle East for centuries to come. It also facilitated the Ottomans' control over the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina, strengthening their religious and political legitimacy.
