In the late 1930s, tension and distrust characterized the relationships between European powers. Against this backdrop, two seemingly ideologically opposed giants, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, negotiated a surprising non-aggression pact. This agreement, known as the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, set the stage for World War II.
Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, and Adolf Hitler, Chancellor of Germany, found a common interest in dividing Eastern Europe into respective spheres of influence. Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov and German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop met in Moscow to formalize this agreement. The pact included secret protocols that outlined detailed plans for the partitioning of Poland and the division of influence over the Baltic States, including Latvia.
This pact shocked many nations, as it temporarily aligned the USSR and Germany. The agreement allowed Germany to invade Poland without fear of Soviet intervention, triggering the outbreak of World War II. The secret protocols were revealed only later, exposing the premeditated division of territories.
For Latvia and other Baltic States, the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact had dire consequences. Initially, these countries were placed under Soviet influence. Subsequently, Latvia was occupied by Soviet forces, leading to a period of repression, mass deportations, and the imposition of Soviet policies. This was followed by Nazi occupation, which brought further devastation, including the persecution and genocide of its Jewish population.
The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact had lasting impacts on the political landscape of Eastern Europe, shaping borders and influencing post-war geopolitical tensions. The legacy of this pact continues to resonate, marking it as a pivotal point in 20th-century history.
