In the summer of 1940, Latvia was incorporated into the Soviet Union, becoming the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR). This event was preceded by the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, which divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence. Following this agreement, Soviet forces issued an ultimatum to Latvia, demanding the establishment of a pro-Soviet government. Subsequently, Soviet troops entered the country.
The occupation was swiftly followed by a series of political changes. A pro-Soviet government was installed, and elections were held under the supervision of Soviet authorities. These elections, however, were widely regarded as neither free nor fair, with a single candidate list approved by the occupying forces. The newly formed Latvian parliament then voted in favor of joining the Soviet Union, a move that was cemented through the merger with the USSR.
The incorporation of Latvia into the Soviet Union had significant consequences. Many Latvians faced repression, deportations to labor camps, and loss of property. Sovietization policies were implemented, aiming to integrate Latvia into the Soviet political and economic system. This involved the collectivization of agriculture and the nationalization of industries, which disrupted the pre-existing socio-economic order.
Statistically, it is estimated that tens of thousands of Latvians were deported or emigrated during the Soviet occupation. Additionally, the demographic landscape of Latvia changed significantly due to the influx of people from other parts of the Soviet Union.
This period marked the beginning of five decades of Soviet rule in Latvia, which ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. The incorporation into the Soviet Union remains a pivotal moment in Latvian history, shaping its socio-political landscape for decades to come.
