In 1995, Derek Kelly received the Rupert Chalmers Award for his longstanding contribution to the British turkey industry. The award commemorates Rupert Chalmers-Watson, a founder of the British Turkey Federation and an influential figure in the development of the sector. It recognises sustained contribution and commitment to the turkey industry. KellyBronze’s own history and the Egg and Poultry Industry Conference chronology both record Derek as the 1995 recipient.
The recognition reflected Derek’s involvement in the industry beyond our family business. During his career, he served as a British Poultry Council member, represented poultry on the NFU Council and was president of the Anglian Turkey Association.
The award later became a shared distinction within the Kelly family. Derek’s son Paul received the Rupert Chalmers-Watson trophy in 2007 for his own contribution to the turkey sector. KellyBronze records Derek and Paul as the only father and son to have received the award.
