On 29/03/2008, Jerry Seinfeld was involved in a serious single-car accident in the Hamptons, New York, after the brakes on his vintage 1967 Fiat 500 reportedly failed while he was driving near East Hampton. Despite the vehicle flipping over during the incident, Seinfeld was not injured and walked away safely.
The accident occurred on Skimhampton Road as Seinfeld was driving toward Montauk Highway, also known as Route 27. According to reports at the time, Seinfeld realized that the Fiat’s brakes had become completely unresponsive while approaching a busy intersection. Attempting to avoid entering traffic uncontrollably, he first tried using the emergency brake, but it also failed to stop the vehicle.
Facing the possibility of driving into oncoming traffic, Seinfeld reportedly downshifted the car and sharply turned the steering wheel to the right in an effort to reduce speed and avoid the intersection. The maneuver caused the small vintage vehicle to skid and overturn. The Fiat came to rest on its side or roof only yards away from the highway.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Seinfeld was unharmed. He had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and did not require hospitalization. Media coverage quickly spread because of both the dramatic nature of the accident and Seinfeld’s well-known enthusiasm for automobiles, particularly rare and vintage European cars.
Some early reports incorrectly identified the vehicle model, but later coverage clarified that the car involved was a 1967 Fiat 500. Seinfeld was widely recognized for maintaining one of the most prominent private Porsche collections in the United States, though he also owned numerous other classic and collectible vehicles.
The incident highlighted the mechanical risks sometimes associated with operating vintage automobiles, especially vehicles produced decades before modern braking and safety systems became standard. Despite the rollover, the low speed of the vehicle and Seinfeld’s emergency actions likely contributed to the relatively safe outcome.
