Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, had a vision to establish an education system that would foster sustainable growth and technological advancements. In line with his vision, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were formally established. This move marked the beginning of a new era focusing on higher technical education in India.
The establishment of the IITs was part of Nehru’s broader plan to strengthen India's infrastructure and drive economic development through self-reliance in science and technology. The first institute, IIT Kharagpur, began operations in a hijacked detention camp of the British Raj, improvising classrooms and laboratories in those confined spaces to nurture future engineers and technocrats. This inception laid the groundwork for subsequent IITs in various parts of the country, growing into a network recognized globally for excellence.
IITs were modeled after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, calibrated to suit the Indian socio-economic backdrop. The Indian government, along with international collaborations—especially with the Soviet Union, the United States, and Germany—ensured the institutions had the requisite technological infrastructure and academic expertise.
By providing high-quality engineering education, the IITs aimed to propel India into the league of technologically advanced nations. The outcome of this strategic initiative became tangible in many ways. Graduates from IITs have contributed significantly to both national and international technological advancements. Notably, IIT alumni have held prestigious positions in global companies and academia, thus establishing a legacy of innovation and leadership.
In terms of statistics, the IITs started with a few hundred students annually, a number which has now expanded to tens of thousands. The rigorous selection process through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) has earned its notoriety, with acceptance rates often lower than the top universities worldwide, reflecting the high standards IITs uphold.
This formal step of establishing the IITs underlined Nehru's vision for a modern India where education, especially technical education, would play a pivotal role in the nation's progress. Over the years, the IITs have continually evolved, adapting to new technologies and educational methodologies to remain at the forefront of technical education.
