In July 2018, Ivanka Trump announced the closure of her namesake fashion brand, ending a business she had led for over a decade in order to focus fully on her role as a Senior Advisor in the White House. The decision marked a shift away from her private-sector career as she continued her work in Washington during her father’s presidency.
In a public statement at the time, Ivanka Trump said her “immediate priority” was her official duties and added that she did not know “when or if” she would return to the business world. The move came after she had stepped back from day-to-day management of the company in 2017 upon entering government, transferring control to a trust structure. Despite these measures, the brand remained subject to ongoing ethics scrutiny aimed at avoiding conflicts of interest tied to her position in the administration.
The company had also faced business challenges leading up to its closure. Several major retailers, including Nordstrom and Hudson’s Bay, had discontinued the brand’s products prior to 2018, citing performance considerations. The brand was also the subject of public boycotts during the early years of the Trump administration, which coincided with declining visibility and retail presence.
Following the closure, Ivanka Trump continued to focus on policy initiatives within the administration. Her work included involvement in workforce development programs and the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, which was launched in 2019 to support women’s economic participation globally. After leaving government in 2021, she transitioned into private sector and philanthropic activities, including involvement in international investment projects through Affinity Partners and participation in environmental initiatives aimed at reducing food waste.
