After invading Ireland to support Irish lords against English rule, Edward Bruce declared himself King, aiming to complete his brother Robert the Bruce's mission of driving the English out of the British Isles. Despite initial victories against the English forces, Edward faced resistance from Anglo-Irish lords and the Church. His kingship was not fully accepted by the Irish population due to his reliance on Scottish troops and the brutality of his campaign. The Irish lords who had initially supported him, turned against Edward when his rule became harsher. Ultimately, Edward Bruce's reign was short-lived, marked by resistance and internal conflicts. His death in battle in 1318 marked the end of his claim to the Irish throne, and the English continued their control over Ireland.
