Six Continents was a hospitality company that operated a significant number of hotels and restaurants, including around 2000 restaurants and bars. The name 'Six Continents' was selected from a pool of 10,000 staff submissions and was also the name of the company's loyalty program. The company underwent a major restructuring when it decided to demerge its bar and pubs business, which was subsequently established as a separate entity known as Mitchells & Butlers. This strategic move allowed Six Continents to focus more on its core hotel operations and streamline its business model.
Following the demerger, Six Continents rebranded itself as InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). This change not only reflected the new direction of the company but also simplified the brand identity by dropping the hyphen from the name of its flagship hotel brand, which became InterContinental Hotels. Today, IHG encompasses a diverse portfolio of hotel brands, continuing to operate globally and catering to various market segments. The demerger and renaming were pivotal in shaping the company's future, allowing it to enhance its operational focus and brand recognition in the competitive hospitality industry.
