In 1956, Holiday Inn’s rapidly expanding network helped establish the Memphis-founded company as a leading name in American roadside accommodation. Founded by Kemmons Wilson after opening the first Holiday Inn in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1952, the company used franchising from 1954 to accelerate expansion while promoting recognizable standards for families and motorists. The historical timeline provided for this moment describes Holiday Inn as becoming the world’s largest hotel brand and the first hotel company to reach 300,000 rooms. However, the 300,000-room figure does not align with 1956. IHG’s documented history places Holiday Inn’s 300,000-room achievement in 1977, when the company became the first hotel group to reach that total. Contemporary historical accounts also show that Holiday Inn was still in the early stages of its expansion during the mid-1950s. Holiday Inn’s growth after 1956 was nevertheless exceptionally fast. By 1957, approximately 30 Holiday Inns were operating, and the company reached its 100th hotel in 1959. The first Holiday Inn outside the United States opened in Canada in 1960, followed by the 500th hotel in 1964 and the 1,000th in 1968. The expansion was supported by franchising, standardized facilities and the highly recognizable Holiday Inn “Great Sign” positioned to attract motorists travelling America’s growing highway network. Technology also became part of Holiday Inn’s strategy for managing its expanding network. In 1965, the company introduced Holidex, a centralized computerized reservation system that connected Holiday Inn properties and enabled reservations to be made across the network. By 1977, 25 years after the first Memphis property opened, Holiday Inn had reached the documented threshold of 300,000 rooms, illustrating the scale the franchise model had achieved. Historical Significance Holiday Inn’s mid-1950s expansion established the foundation for the enormous network that followed, but the 300,000-room milestone belongs to 1977 rather than 1956. Keeping those events separate preserves the chronology of the brand’s growth from a small Memphis hotel network into an international hospitality business.
