During the period from 1750 to 1800, Britain experienced a remarkable transformation characterized by rapid urbanization. The population of Britain increased significantly, growing by 280% from 1550 to 1820, in stark contrast to the 50-80% growth seen in the rest of Western Europe. This demographic shift was accompanied by a substantial movement of people from rural areas to urban centers, with Britain accounting for 70% of the total urbanization in Europe during this time. By the end of the 18th century, only the Netherlands surpassed Britain in terms of urbanization levels, highlighting the extent of this shift. The urbanization process was facilitated by the adoption of new materials and technologies, as traditional resources such as wood, charcoal, and thatch were increasingly replaced by coal, coke, imported cotton, brick, and slate. This transition not only supported the burgeoning industries but also altered the landscape of British cities, leading to the development of new infrastructures and housing to accommodate the growing urban population.
