The cotton industry in Britain experienced significant growth during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1797, there were approximately 900 cotton factories operating across the country. This expansion was part of a broader transformation in the British textile industry, which saw a dramatic increase in the use of cotton. For instance, the amount of cotton used by the industry rose from 52 million pounds in 1800 to 588 million pounds by 1850. This surge in production was driven by advancements in technology and machinery, which allowed for more efficient processing of cotton and increased output. The economic impact of the cotton industry was substantial, contributing significantly to Britain's overall industrial output. The share of value added by the cotton textile industry rose from 2.6% in 1760 to 22% by 1831, indicating its growing importance in the national economy. In comparison, the woollen industry contributed 14% in 1801. The rise of cotton factories not only transformed the textile sector but also played a crucial role in the broader industrial revolution, influencing labor patterns, urbanization, and trade.
