The British textile industry experienced significant growth in cotton usage from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. In 1800, the industry utilized 52 million pounds of cotton, a substantial increase from earlier periods. By 1850, this figure had escalated to 588 million pounds, reflecting the rapid industrialization and expansion of cotton manufacturing capabilities. The cotton textile sector's contribution to the overall economy was notable, with its share of value added rising from 2.6% in 1760 to 22% by 1831. This growth was accompanied by a decline in the woollen industry's share, which stood at 14% in 1801. The number of cotton factories also increased significantly, with around 900 operational by 1797, indicating a shift towards mechanized production methods. However, it is important to note that in 1800, less than 0.1% of the world's cotton cloth was produced using machinery developed in Britain, highlighting the nascent stage of mechanization in the global context.
