The journey across the Sahara Desert undertaken by Ibn Battuta is a notable episode in the history of trans-Saharan trade and exploration. Departing from Fez, he prepared for this extensive journey by acquiring camels and joining a caravan, which was essential for traversing the harsh desert landscape. The caravan set out on a route that would take them through various terrains, ultimately reaching the salt-mining center of Taghaza after a grueling 25-day trek. Taghaza was significant as it was a crucial hub for salt production, a valuable commodity in trade, particularly for regions lacking in natural salt resources. The salt mined here was transported across the Sahara and exchanged for gold and other goods, highlighting the economic importance of this route.
