Ibn Battuta, a renowned Moroccan explorer, undertook a notable detour through Iraq and Iran during his travels. Rather than proceeding directly to Baghdad, he chose to explore several significant cities, including Wasit, Basra, Isfahan, and Shiraz. This six-month journey allowed him to experience the rich cultural and historical landscapes of these regions. Each city offered unique insights into the local customs, architecture, and the aftermath of the Mongol invasions that had left a lasting impact on the area. In Baghdad, he observed the remnants of Mongol destruction, which had significantly altered the city's landscape and its cultural heritage. His travels through these cities not only expanded his understanding of the Islamic world but also provided a broader perspective on the socio-political dynamics of the time. After his extensive exploration, he eventually joined a royal caravan led by Abu Sa’id, continuing his journey toward Tabriz, which further enriched his experiences and observations.
