During the period from 1000 to 1200, Islamic scholars played a crucial role in the preservation and enhancement of Hippocratic texts. Notable figures such as Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna, and Ibn Rushd, referred to as Averroes, were instrumental in this endeavor. They translated the original Greek texts of Hippocrates into Arabic, providing not only translations but also extensive commentaries and expansions that enriched the understanding of Hippocratic medicine. This scholarly activity was significant as it ensured that the medical knowledge of Hippocrates was not lost during the European Dark Ages, a time when much of classical knowledge was at risk of being forgotten. The works of these scholars were foundational in the development of medical education and practice in the Islamic world, and they laid the groundwork for the later reintroduction of this knowledge to Europe.
