In February 2004, the Government of Guyana officially designated over 4,000 km² (approximately 1 million acres) of land in the Konashen Indigenous District as the Kanashen Community-Owned Conservation Area. This significant initiative is managed by the Wai Wai people and is recognized as the world's largest community-owned conservation area. The establishment of this conservation area reflects a commitment to sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation, empowering local communities to play a crucial role in environmental stewardship. Additionally, the Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development was created to ensure the protection and sustainable use of the Iwokrama forest area, which is vital for both ecological balance and local livelihoods. Since 2009, Guyana has partnered with Norway to promote green development strategies that prioritize low deforestation rates while fostering economic growth. This collaboration highlights the importance of international support in achieving sustainable development goals and preserving the rich biodiversity of the region.
