On January 9, 2012, the political landscape of Guinea-Bissau was dramatically altered with the death of President Malam Bacai Sanhá, who succumbed to complications from diabetes. Following his passing, Carlos Gomes Júnior, also known as Pereira, was appointed as the interim president. However, the stability of the interim government was short-lived. On April 12, 2012, a coup d'état was executed by members of the military, resulting in the arrest of both the interim president and a prominent presidential candidate. In the wake of this upheaval, General Mamadu Ture Kuruma, the former vice chief of staff, took control of the nation during this transitional period. He initiated negotiations with various opposition parties in an effort to restore order and establish a framework for governance. This series of events highlighted the ongoing political instability in Guinea-Bissau, a country that has faced numerous challenges in its quest for democratic governance and stability.
