On October 4, 2005, Hurricane Stan made landfall in southern Mexico, but its devastating effects were felt most in Guatemala. The storm triggered torrential rains that led to catastrophic landslides and floods, especially in the highland and coastal regions. Entire villages were buried under mudslides, with Panabaj being one of the worst-hit areas.
By the time the storm dissipated, over 1,500 people were killed, with many more missing. The destruction of roads, bridges, and agricultural land crippled the country’s economy. The Guatemalan government declared a state of emergency, and international aid poured in to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
Hurricane Stan remains one of Guatemala’s deadliest natural disasters, highlighting the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events.
