Beginning of the Liberal Revolution of 1871

In 1871, Guatemala experienced a significant transformation known as the 'Liberal Revolution,' spearheaded by Justo Rufino Barrios. This period marked the beginning of liberal governments in the country, which aimed to modernize Guatemala's economy and infrastructure. Barrios implemented various reforms that focused on improving trade, introducing new agricultural crops, and fostering manufacturing industries. One of the most notable changes during this era was the rise of coffee as a crucial cash crop, which played a vital role in boosting the country's economy. Barrios had grand ambitions of reuniting Central America, leading to military conflicts in pursuit of this goal. Unfortunately, his aspirations culminated in tragedy when he lost his life in battle against Salvadoran forces in 1885.
