On December 31, 1981, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings executed a successful coup d'état, overthrowing the government of President Hilla Limann in Ghana. This marked Rawlings' second coup, following his initial takeover in 1979. After seizing power, Rawlings established the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), under which he ruled as the head of state. His regime was characterized by a focus on economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the struggling Ghanaian economy and implementing anti-corruption measures.
However, Rawlings' rule was also marred by significant human rights abuses and political repression, as dissent was often met with harsh consequences. Despite these controversies, Rawlings remained a pivotal figure in Ghanaian politics, transitioning to a democratically elected presidency in 1992. His leadership style and policies have left a lasting impact on the political landscape of Ghana, shaping the country's journey towards democracy and governance reforms.
