Galileo arrived in Rome to face the Inquisition

Galileo Galilei, a prominent figure in the scientific revolution, faced the Roman Inquisition due to his support of heliocentrism, the theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun. This theory contradicted the prevailing geocentric view endorsed by the Catholic Church, which held that the Earth was the center of the universe. At the age of 69, Galileo arrived in Rome to confront the charges against him. His health was deteriorating, as he suffered from severe sciatica, which affected his mobility. Despite the gravity of the situation, he was granted a degree of leniency; instead of being confined to a prison cell, he was allowed to stay at the residence of the Tuscan ambassador. This concession was likely influenced by his connections to the Medici family, who had been patrons of his work and provided him with some protection.
