Ford Motor Company fully exited the Russian market in 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, ending more than two decades of manufacturing and commercial operations in the country. The company’s withdrawal unfolded in several stages during the year and reflected the broader corporate response by international businesses reassessing their presence in Russia after the invasion began in February 2022. In March 2022, only days after the invasion, Ford announced the immediate suspension of its remaining operations in Russia. At the time, Ford’s primary involvement in the country centered on its minority ownership stake in the Sollers Ford joint venture, which produced Ford Transit commercial vans. Ford had already reduced much of its Russian passenger vehicle business in earlier years, but the joint venture remained active in the commercial vehicle sector. Alongside the operational suspension, Ford publicly expressed support for Ukraine through symbolic and humanitarian measures. The company raised the Ukrainian flag outside its global headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, and the Ford Motor Company Fund donated $100,000 to the GlobalGiving Ukraine Relief Fund. Ford later provided 50 Ford Ranger pickup trucks to support humanitarian and relief operations connected to the war in Ukraine. In October 2022, Ford finalized its complete withdrawal from Russia by selling its 49% stake in the Sollers Ford joint venture for what the company described as a nominal value. The divestment formally ended Ford’s direct structural presence in the Russian automotive market after approximately 20 years of manufacturing activity in the country. The agreement included a five-year option allowing Ford to repurchase the shares if geopolitical conditions were to change in the future. However, industry analysts observed that a large-scale return appeared unlikely given Ford’s broader global strategy, which had already focused on reducing operations in lower-profit international markets and concentrating resources on North America, commercial vehicles, and electric vehicle development. Ford’s departure formed part of a larger wave of exits by international automakers and multinational corporations responding to sanctions, supply chain disruptions, financial uncertainty, and reputational concerns related to the conflict. Companies including Renault, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and General Motors also reduced or ended operations in Russia during 2022. Historical Significance : Ford’s exit from Russia reflected one of the largest corporate withdrawal movements since the end of the Cold War, as multinational companies reassessed geopolitical risk alongside financial considerations. The departure also marked the conclusion of Ford’s long-term effort to establish a stable manufacturing presence in the Russian automotive sector.
