In the aftermath of Qatar's selection to host the 2022 World Cup, serious allegations of bribery emerged, primarily instigated by Lord Triesman of the English Football Association. These claims were rooted in information provided by a whistleblower connected to the Qatari bid. The allegations prompted FIFA to initiate an internal inquiry, raising the possibility of a revote for the World Cup if the claims were substantiated. FIFA's president acknowledged the growing public sentiment favoring a reevaluation of the vote that awarded Qatar the hosting rights. Testimonies presented to a UK parliamentary inquiry revealed that Jack Warner from Trinidad and Tobago allegedly solicited $4 million for an educational initiative in exchange for his vote, while Nicolás Léoz from Paraguay purportedly requested an honorary knighthood. Additionally, two reporters from the Sunday Times claimed that Jacques Anouma and Issa Hayatou received $1.5 million each to support Qatar's bid, although all parties involved denied these allegations. The controversy deepened with the involvement of Mohammed bin Hammam, a key figure in securing the World Cup for Qatar, who withdrew his candidacy for FIFA president amid accusations of bribing 25 FIFA officials. Following these allegations, FIFA suspended both bin Hammam and Warner as investigations into their conduct progressed. Warner claimed that FIFA had granted him rights to the 1998 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago as a reward for his support of Blatter's presidential campaign, suggesting a pattern of preferential treatment linked to political alliances within FIFA. The allegations of corruption were further fueled by Chuck Blazer, the general secretary of CONCACAF, who brought the accusations against bin Hammam and Warner to light. Attempts by CONCACAF president Lisle Austin to dismiss Blazer were thwarted by the executive committee, highlighting the internal conflicts and challenges within the organization as it grappled with the fallout from these serious allegations.
