Fidel Castro Ruz, one of the most iconic and controversial political figures of the 20th century, was born in the small eastern Cuban hamlet of Birán on August 13, 1926. His early life was shaped by his upbringing as the son of Ángel Castro, a Spanish-born landowner who had made a fortune in the sugarcane business. Though Fidel came from relative privilege, his surroundings exposed him to the stark inequalities that plagued Cuban society. This early exposure to both affluence and poverty would deeply influence his ideological development, driving his later revolutionary ideals and fierce opposition to imperialism and capitalism.
Educated in elite Jesuit schools, Castro was known for his intelligence, rebellious nature, and passion for justice. He later studied law at the University of Havana, where his political activism took root. Inspired by nationalist and anti-imperialist movements, he would rise to become the leader of the Cuban Revolution, overthrowing the U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Castro’s revolutionary journey, however, began in the humble fields of Birán, where the seeds of his political awakening were sown—an awakening that would ultimately alter the course of Cuban and global history.
