Michael Faraday conducted experiments to investigate the influence of magnetic fields on spectral lines using a spectroscope. His goal was to observe any changes in the spectral lines when subjected to a magnetic field. Although Faraday's apparatus was not advanced enough to detect any significant effects, his pioneering work laid the groundwork for future research in this area. The inquiry into the magnetic effects on light was later validated by Pieter Zeeman, who successfully demonstrated the phenomenon known as the Zeeman effect. This effect describes the splitting of spectral lines in the presence of a magnetic field, providing crucial insights into the interaction between light and magnetic fields. Faraday's initial exploration was instrumental in advancing the field of spectroscopy and understanding the fundamental principles of electromagnetism, which have had lasting implications in both physics and engineering.
