By the late 1930s, we had established fountain pens as an important part of the Esterbrook business. Our approach centred on practical writing instruments at accessible prices rather than the premium positioning adopted by some other fountain-pen manufacturers. The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History notes that Esterbrook advertising of the period promoted pens that were both inexpensive and sturdy, reflecting the market the company was seeking to serve. Interchangeable Renew-Point nib units were central to that approach. Users could unscrew one complete nib unit and install another suited to a particular kind of writing. Esterbrook offered points for purposes including school and general writing, bookkeeping, shorthand, manifold work, fine writing and broader or more flexible styles. A 1938 catalogue explicitly presented the fountain pen as a practical tool for the “business of writing” and organised models for school, penmanship, stenographic, business and adult use. The combination of affordable pens and replaceable points allowed customers to choose a writing experience without purchasing a different pen for every task. Models developed during this period, including the Dollar Pen family, helped establish the practical, customisable formula that would continue through Esterbrook's later fountain-pen ranges.
