The University of Asmara holds the distinction of being the oldest university in Eritrea, having been established to provide higher education opportunities in the region. Its inception marked a pivotal development in the educational landscape of Eritrea, paving the way for the establishment of several other colleges across the country. The university was instrumental in fostering academic growth and contributing to the professional development of Eritrean students. However, it is currently not operational, which raises concerns about the continuity of higher education in the region. In the absence of the university, the Eritrea Institute of Technology has emerged as the primary institution for higher studies, focusing on science, engineering, and education, thereby filling some of the educational gaps left by the closure of the University of Asmara.
The impact of higher education institutions like the University of Asmara extends beyond academic training; they play a crucial role in enhancing literacy rates and overall educational attainment in the country. As of recent statistics, Eritrea boasts an adult literacy rate of 76.6%, with a notable disparity between genders—84.4% for men and 68.9% for women. This highlights the ongoing challenges in achieving equitable access to education. The legacy of the University of Asmara continues to influence the educational framework in Eritrea, emphasizing the need for revitalization of higher education to support national development and improve literacy rates across all demographics.
