In 2007, we purchased 72 acres of woodland adjoining The Wild Boar near Windermere, giving the property its own private woods for guests to enjoy. Our company history records the acquisition among the key developments of that year.
The woodland, set in the Gilpin Valley, substantially extended the outdoor space associated with the hotel. Over time, we developed walking trails and wildlife areas within the woods, while the estate provided a setting for organised outdoor experiences including falconry and archery. The woodland also contains a tarn and supports wildlife including deer and a range of birdlife.
The event went on to become an established fixture on Windermere and grew considerably in subsequent years. Although the Great North Swim is now staged at Brockhole on Windermere, its beginnings at Low Wood Bay remain an important part of our long association with watersports and outdoor activity on the lake.
