According to Grimes, "X" stands for the "unknown variable," "Æ" is an elven spelling of "AI" (which can also stand for artificial intelligence or "love" in several languages), and "A-12" references the Archangel 12 aircraft, a precursor to the SR-71, which is one of Musk’s favorite planes. The "A" also symbolizes "Archangel," Grimes' favorite song. Due to Californian naming laws, which allow only the use of the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language, the couple was required to slightly alter their son's name. They replaced the numeral "12" with "Xii," officially making the child’s name "X Æ A-Xii." The birth of their son came during a period of significant activity for Musk, as SpaceX was on the verge of launching its historic Crew Dragon mission with NASA, sending astronauts to the International Space Station for the first time in nearly a decade.
