The Third Spanish Armada was launched by Philip II of Spain as a response to ongoing conflicts with England. This military campaign aimed to reinforce Spain's naval power and assert dominance over the English Channel. However, the expedition faced significant challenges from the outset. The fleet encountered severe weather conditions shortly after setting sail, which ultimately led to its dispersion near the English coast. The storm resulted in the loss of 28 ships, either sunk or captured, and approximately 2,000 men were lost in the chaos. This event marked another setback for Spain, which had already faced financial difficulties, including a declaration of bankruptcy following the Cádiz raid. The failure of the Armada not only weakened Spain's naval capabilities but also bolstered English morale and military reputation. In recognition of the successful defense against the Armada, Elizabeth I awarded Charles Howard the title of Earl of Nottingham, highlighting the importance of this naval engagement in the broader context of Anglo-Spanish relations.
