The Mariscal Sucre International Airport, located in Tababela, was inaugurated with the support of Canadian expertise. This new facility was developed to enhance the aviation infrastructure of Quito, which is recognized as one of the best in Latin America. The construction of the airport aimed to accommodate increasing air traffic and improve the overall travel experience for both domestic and international passengers. However, the main access road connecting the airport to the city center was not completed at the time of the airport's inauguration. As a result, travelers faced significant delays, with travel times extending up to two hours during peak hours. This situation highlighted the need for improved transportation infrastructure to support the new airport's operations. In parallel, the old airport site in the city center is being repurposed into parkland and light industrial areas, reflecting a strategic shift in urban planning to enhance the quality of life in Quito while accommodating future growth in the region.
