On 25/07/2026, Marvel Studios officially announced Black Panther 3 during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in San Diego, California. The studio confirmed that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler would return as director, with the film scheduled for theatrical release on 15/12/2028. The announcement also introduced British actor David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, while two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington remained associated with the production following earlier discussions about a role being developed specifically for him.
The announcement took place during a Marvel Studios presentation led by studio president Kevin Feige. Coogler appeared onstage alongside returning franchise actors Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who portray Shuri and M'Baku. During the presentation, Coogler introduced Jonsson as the actor who would take on the Black Panther identity. Jonsson was confirmed to portray the adult son of T'Challa, the Wakandan king originally played by the late Chadwick Boseman. The announcement established the character's place in the next installment rather than replacing Boseman's original portrayal of T'Challa.
Jonsson, known for his performances in Alien: Romulus (2024) and the television series Industry, joined the franchise as the next generation of Wakandan royalty. His character had previously been introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), when Nakia revealed that she and T'Challa had a son named Toussaint, whose Wakandan name was also T'Challa. The third film's casting announcement confirmed that this storyline would continue with the character portrayed as an adult.
Washington's connection to Black Panther 3 began before the Comic-Con announcement. In November 2024, while discussing his forthcoming acting projects, Washington publicly revealed that Coogler was writing a role for him in another Black Panther film. His comments generated attention because Washington had not previously appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Coogler subsequently acknowledged his interest in working with Washington, and entertainment coverage continued to identify the actor with the developing production.
Although Washington was associated with the project, Marvel's official Comic-Con announcement concentrated on Coogler's return, Jonsson's casting, and the theatrical release date. The studio did not publicly identify Washington's character during the presentation. Consequently, the specific nature of his role, including whether he would portray a Wakandan figure or another character within the story, remained undisclosed. His involvement was therefore distinct from the casting details formally presented onstage.
The third installment follows Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), both directed by Coogler. The original film introduced Boseman's T'Challa as the central character and explored Wakanda's political leadership and technological development. Following Boseman's death on 28/08/2020, the sequel addressed T'Challa's death within its story and followed Shuri as she assumed the Black Panther mantle. The introduction of T'Challa's son in the sequel provided the narrative foundation for the new casting revealed in July 2026.
The San Diego Comic-Con presentation also included announcements involving Avengers: Doomsday and a new Ghost Rider project starring Ryan Gosling. Within that broader presentation, Black Panther 3 received a confirmed release date and an identified lead actor. For Washington, the announcement kept attention on a prospective Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance, although the studio had not yet disclosed the character he would play.
Why This Moment Matters
The announcement connected the next generation of Wakanda's royal family with the continuing work of Ryan Coogler and the prospect of Denzel Washington's first Marvel Cinematic Universe role. Washington also has a documented connection to the franchise's history: he helped finance an acting program attended by Chadwick Boseman, who acknowledged that support publicly in 2019. The proposed collaboration would bring Washington into a film series whose original lead had pers
