On 24/02/2025, Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington returned to Broadway in a revival of William Shakespeare's Othello at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City. Washington portrayed the title character, Othello, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago, under the direction of Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon. The production began preview performances ahead of its official Broadway opening on 23/03/2025, with a limited engagement scheduled through 08/06/2025. The revival brought Shakespeare's tragedy back to Broadway for the first time since the 1982 production starring James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer.
(2005), and August Wilson's Fences (2010), for which he received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. His return to Othello also carried a personal theatrical connection, as Washington had previously portrayed the character while studying at Fordham University in the 1970s, approximately 48 years before the 2025 revival.
Directed by Leon, the new production presented Shakespeare's tragedy in a contemporary setting, relocating the action to October 2028 rather than the play's traditional historical period. Washington played Othello, a respected military commander whose marriage to Desdemona becomes the target of manipulation by Iago, his ambitious lieutenant. Gyllenhaal's character engineers a campaign of suspicion and deception, exploiting Othello's trust and jealousy. The story examines betrayal, power, prejudice, and the destructive consequences of manipulation.
The supporting cast included Molly Osborne as Desdemona, Andrew Burnap as Cassio, Kimber Elayne Sprawl as Emilia, Anthony Michael Lopez as Roderigo, and Daniel Pearce as Brabantio. Additional performers included Neal Bledsoe, Julee Cerda, Ezra Knight, Gene Gillette, and Rob Heaps. The production's creative team featured scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Natasha Katz, and sound designer Justin Ellington. Brian Anthony Moreland served as lead producer.
Washington and Gyllenhaal brought different theatrical backgrounds to the production. Washington had established an extensive Broadway career alongside his film work, while Gyllenhaal had previously appeared in Broadway productions including Constellations (2015), Sunday in the Park with George (2017), and Sea Wall/A Life (2019). Their collaboration placed the two actors in roles defined by an increasingly adversarial relationship, with Iago's manipulation driving the tragedy toward its conclusion.
The revival was presented as a strictly limited 15-week engagement at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, located at 243 West 47th Street in Manhattan's Theater District. Following the first preview on 24/02/2025, the production officially opened on 23/03/2025 and concluded on 08/06/2025. According to the Internet Broadway Database, the engagement comprised 30 preview performances and 89 regular Broadway performances.
Why This Moment Matters
Washington's return to Othello connected his early Shakespearean training at Fordham University with his established career as a Tony Award-winning Broadway performer. It also marked the first Broadway revival of the tragedy in more than four decades, bringing Washington and Gyllenhaal together in a production directed by Kenny Leon.
