Letterman Relocates to Los Angeles

In 1975, David Letterman made a significant move to Los Angeles, California, driven by the encouragement of his then-wife Michelle and several of his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers. With aspirations of becoming a comedy writer, Letterman packed his belongings into his trusty pickup truck and set off for the West Coast. This truck remained a cherished possession, as he still owned it as of 2012. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Letterman began honing his craft at The Comedy Store, a renowned venue for stand-up comedy. His talent quickly caught the attention of fellow comedians, including Jimmie Walker, who recognized his potential. With an endorsement from George Miller, Letterman joined a talented group of comedians hired by Walker to write jokes for his stand-up act. This group included notable names such as Jay Leno, Paul Mooney, and Louie Anderson, among others. This pivotal move marked the beginning of Letterman's illustrious career in comedy, ultimately leading him to become a household name in the entertainment industry.
