The Treaty of Adrianople (1568) was a peace agreement signed between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy on February 17, 1568, marking the end of the Austro-Turkish War (1566–1568). This treaty solidified Ottoman dominance in Central Europe and established a period of relative peace between the two empires.
Background
The treaty followed the Siege of Szigetvár (1566), a major conflict during the war. Although the Ottomans won the battle, their ruler, Suleiman the Magnificent, died during the siege. His successor, Selim II, was more interested in consolidating power rather than continuing costly military campaigns. The Habsburg ruler, Maximilian II, also sought peace, recognizing the Ottoman military superiority and the heavy toll of continued warfare.
Key Terms of the Treaty
Habsburg Recognition of Ottoman Control
The Habsburgs agreed to recognize Ottoman rule over Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia, reinforcing Ottoman authority in the region.
Annual Tribute
Maximilian II agreed to pay an annual tribute of 30,000 ducats to the Ottomans, effectively acknowledging the Habsburgs as a vassal in the eyes of the Ottoman state.
Border Stability
Both empires accepted the status quo of their territorial boundaries, preventing further military conflicts in the region for the time being.
Eight-Year Truce
Although the treaty itself did not establish a permanent peace, it initiated an eight-year truce, reducing tensions and allowing both sides to focus on internal affairs.
Significance
The Treaty of Adrianople (1568) was crucial in shaping Ottoman-Habsburg relations. It reaffirmed Ottoman dominance in Southeastern Europe and temporarily ended large-scale hostilities between the two powers. However, tensions remained, leading to future conflicts such as the Long Turkish War (1593–1606).
This treaty also exemplified the Ottoman practice of diplomacy, using both military pressure and negotiated settlements to maintain control over their vast empire.
