On January 1, 2023, Croatia achieved two significant milestones in its path toward full European integration. The country formally adopted the euro as its official currency, becoming the 20th member of the Eurozone, and also joined the Schengen Area as its 27th member. These two landmark events marked the culmination of Croatia's deeper integration into the European Union, enhancing both its economic and political ties with the EU.
Adopting the Euro
By adopting the euro, Croatia replaced its previous currency, the kuna, with the single European currency. This move represented a significant step in aligning Croatia’s economy more closely with the broader Eurozone, fostering greater stability, and improving cross-border trade and investment. Croatia’s entry into the Eurozone followed years of economic preparation and meeting strict criteria set by the European Central Bank, including controlling inflation, ensuring budgetary discipline, and stabilizing exchange rates. For Croatians, this meant easier travel and trade within the Eurozone, no more currency exchange fees, and better protection against economic shocks.
Joining the Schengen Area
At the same time, Croatia also joined the Schengen Area, which allows for passport-free travel across much of Europe. As the 27th member of this zone, Croatia eliminated border controls with other Schengen countries, facilitating easier movement of people and goods. For businesses and citizens, this brought more seamless travel across European borders, improving tourism, trade, and general mobility. Joining Schengen was a significant accomplishment that further embedded Croatia within the core framework of the European Union.
These two developments, achieved simultaneously, signified Croatia’s full integration into the EU after joining the union in 2013. They also solidified the country's status as an essential and active participant in the European project, enhancing its influence and opportunities on the continent.
