In July 2022, Croatia celebrated the completion of the Pelješac Bridge, a monumental infrastructure project that finally connected the city of Dubrovnik with mainland Croatia. This long-awaited bridge provided a direct link over the Adriatic Sea, bypassing a narrow strip of Bosnian territory that previously divided Croatia’s southernmost region from the rest of the country.
The Pelješac Bridge spans over 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) and connects the Croatian mainland near the town of Komarna to the Pelješac Peninsula, from which a road continues on to Dubrovnik. Prior to the bridge, travelers had to pass through two border checkpoints—Croatian and Bosnian—on a brief but time-consuming detour through Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Neum corridor to reach Dubrovnik, which created both logistical challenges and delays for residents and tourists alike. With the bridge now in place, travel time has been significantly reduced, benefiting tourism, commerce, and local communities.
The project, which cost approximately €420 million, was co-funded by the European Union, covering about 85% of the total expenses. This bridge not only solves a practical problem for Croatia but also holds symbolic importance, as it enhances national unity and connectivity. The construction, carried out primarily by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, was lauded for its engineering and architectural achievement, especially given the challenges posed by the sea and terrain.
The completion of the Pelješac Bridge in July 2022 was hailed as a historic moment, uniting Croatia geographically and reinforcing its infrastructure as a modern European nation.
