Although Cristiano Ronaldo did not win the UEFA Champions League in 2006, he later became widely recognized for a major charitable gesture connected to Real Madrid’s 2016 Champions League triumph. Following the club’s victory over Atlético Madrid in the 2016 final, reports stated that Ronaldo donated his entire €600,000 Champions League bonus to humanitarian causes through organizations linked to the United Nations and global child welfare initiatives.
According to multiple reports at the time, Ronaldo instructed his longtime agent Jorge Mendes to distribute the funds among charitable organizations including UNICEF
, Save the Children
, and World Vision
. The donation became part of Ronaldo’s broader reputation for supporting medical, disaster-relief, and children’s charities throughout his career.
The charitable contribution came shortly after one of the most successful periods of Ronaldo’s football life. In 2016, he captained Portugal to victory at UEFA Euro 2016 and helped Real Madrid secure the UEFA Champions League title under manager Zinedine Zidane. The Champions League final, played in Milan on 28/05/2016, ended with Real Madrid defeating Atlético Madrid in a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw.
A decade earlier, however, Ronaldo was still in the developmental stage of his career at Manchester United. During 2006, he continued evolving from a talented winger into one of the most influential players in European football. The year included several major milestones that shaped his rise to global prominence.
At the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, Ronaldo helped Portugal reach the semi-finals in one of the country’s strongest tournament performances in modern history. He scored his first World Cup goal with a penalty against Iran during the group stage, becoming the youngest Portuguese player at that time to score in a World Cup finals tournament. Portugal ultimately finished fourth after losing to France in the semi-final and Germany in the third-place playoff.
The 2006–07 season also marked Ronaldo’s breakthrough in the UEFA Champions League with Manchester United. During a memorable quarter-final match against AS Roma at Old Trafford, he scored his first goals in the competition’s main stages as United defeated the Italian club 7–1 in one of the most dominant performances of Sir Alex Ferguson’s era.
Domestically, Ronaldo won the Football League Cup with Manchester United in 2006 and played a central role in the club’s return to Premier League dominance. The 2006–07 season began a run of three consecutive English league titles for Manchester United between 2007 and 2009, with Ronaldo increasingly becoming the team’s attacking leader.
The contrast between Ronaldo’s early rise in 2006 and his humanitarian reputation by 2016 reflected the broader evolution of his public identity over time. As his football success expanded globally, so did his involvement in charity campaigns, medical fundraising, and international humanitarian work.
