The Cook Islands played a notable role in World War I by contributing nearly 500 men through five contingents. This response was characterized by a strong sense of patriotism among the island's young men, who volunteered to support the Māori Contingents and the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Rifles. The first group of recruits departed on the SS Te Anau, arriving in Egypt at a critical time when New Zealand units were preparing to be deployed to the Western Front. The commitment of the Cook Islands was further exemplified by the establishment of a Patriotic Fund, which was quickly organized to raise financial support for the war effort. This initiative not only provided resources for the soldiers but also fostered a sense of community and shared purpose among the islanders, as they rallied to support their fellow countrymen in the conflict.
