On June 1, 1980, media entrepreneur Ted Turner launched the Cable News Network (CNN) from Atlanta, Georgia - the world's first 24-hour cable news channel. At a time when television news was limited to brief nightly broadcasts on ABC, CBS, and NBC, CNN's round-the-clock format was seen as a risky, even reckless idea; critics dismissed it early on as the "Chicken Noodle Network" because of its modest budget and small staff compared to the established networks. The channel signed on using a transponder on Satcom 1 after a launch mishap with its originally planned satellite, and its very first broadcast led with a story on the attempted assassination of civil rights leader Vernon Jordan. Despite the skepticism, CNN's constant news cycle proved to be exactly what audiences wanted, and it went on to redefine how the world consumes news - laying the foundation for the always-on media landscape we have today.
