Departed La Isabela for Spain

La Isabela was established as a settlement in the present-day Dominican Republic following the return of Christopher Columbus to Hispaniola. The settlement was founded after the destruction of La Navidad, where all 39 men had been killed due to conflicts with the local chief Caonabo's forces. La Isabela was poorly located, leading to significant challenges for the settlers. By the end of the first year, two-thirds of the settlers had succumbed to disease and famine, highlighting the harsh conditions faced in the new world. Despite these difficulties, Columbus continued to explore the surrounding regions, including Cuba and Jamaica, during his time in the area. After approximately 30 months of establishing and managing the settlement, Columbus departed La Isabela for Spain, marking a significant transition in his exploration efforts and the ongoing European interest in the Americas. This departure signified not only a return to Spain but also a shift in focus as Columbus sought to report on his findings and the challenges faced in the New World.
