Birmingham City Council initiated legal action against Cadbury Schweppes due to alleged violations of food safety regulations. This decision followed an outbreak of Salmonella montevideo, which was linked to Cadbury products. The Health Protection Agency reported that 37 individuals were infected, with one case requiring hospitalization and isolation for five days after consuming a Cadbury caramel bar. The investigation, led by Herefordshire Council, resulted in additional charges against the company, bringing the total to nine. Cadbury Schweppes accepted responsibility for the breaches and pleaded guilty to all charges. The Birmingham Crown Court imposed a fine of one million pounds on the company. Analysts noted that this financial penalty was not significant for the corporation, attributing this to mitigating circumstances such as the company's prompt admission of guilt and the belief that the health risk was underestimated at the time of the outbreak.
