BYD Reaches No. 91 on the Fortune Global 500

BYD reached No. 91 on the 2025 Fortune Global 500 ranking, according to the list released on 29/07/2025, becoming one of the world's 100 largest companies by revenue for the first time. The Shenzhen based company improved its position by 52 places from No. 143 in 2024 and recorded its fourth consecutive appearance on the annual ranking after first joining the list in 2022. The Fortune Global 500 ranks companies according to total revenue. In the 2025 edition, the 500 companies on the list generated a combined USD 41.7 trillion in revenue and employed 70.1 million people worldwide. Walmart retained the top position for the twelfth consecutive year. BYD's move to No. 91 placed it ahead of Tesla, which ranked No. 106 in the same edition. BYD's rise in the ranking followed a year of strong financial and operational results. In 2024, the company reported annual revenue of RMB 777.1 billion, equivalent to approximately USD 107.1 billion, representing a 29 percent increase compared with the previous year. The company also sold 4.27 million new energy vehicles during 2024, an increase of 41 percent from the previous year. This marked BYD's third consecutive year as the global leader in new energy passenger vehicle sales. The company attributed part of its growth to continued investment in research and development. BYD reported R&D spending of RMB 54.2 billion in 2024, a 36 percent year over year increase. According to the company, research and development expenditure exceeded annual net profit in 13 of the 14 years between 2011 and 2024. Technologies highlighted by BYD include the Blade Battery, the DiSus Intelligent Body Control System, and Megawatt Flash Charging technology. International expansion also contributed to BYD's growth. During the first half of 2025, the company's overseas sales of passenger vehicles and pickup trucks exceeded 470,000 units. BYD expanded its international footprint through developments including the establishment of a European headquarters in Hungary, the production of the first vehicle at its manufacturing facility in Brazil, and the delivery of its 90,000th new energy vehicle in Thailand. By mid 2025, BYD vehicles were available in 112 countries and regions.
