BYD has developed the SkyShuttle, an Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) system that operates autonomously and is powered by batteries. This innovative transit solution runs on elevated beams, distinguishing itself from traditional monorails by utilizing guiding wheels that are positioned between two beams of the track. The development of the SkyShuttle spanned seven years and involved an investment exceeding 1.5 billion USD. This substantial financial commitment reflects BYD's dedication to advancing public transportation technology and addressing urban mobility challenges. Currently, operational SkyShuttle systems can be found in several cities across China, including the Pingshan SkyShuttle in Shenzhen, the Bishan SkyShuttle in Chongqing, and the Jinan SkyShuttle in Jinan. These systems are designed to enhance urban transit efficiency, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a sustainable alternative to conventional transportation methods. The introduction of the SkyShuttle is part of a broader trend towards the adoption of automated and environmentally friendly transit solutions, which are increasingly important in the context of growing urban populations and the need for sustainable infrastructure.
