Notorious (2009) is a biographical drama directed by George Tillman Jr., chronicling the rise and tragic fall of Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G., one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history. Jamal Woolard stars as Biggie, delivering a grounded and charismatic performance that captures his transformation from a Brooklyn street hustler to a rap icon signed to Bad Boy Records. The film follows his turbulent personal life, his complex relationships with his mother (Angela Bassett), wife Faith Evans (Antonique Smith), and friend-turned-rival Tupac Shakur, while also spotlighting the East Coast–West Coast rap feud that overshadowed his career and culminated in his still-unsolved murder in 1997.
The film performed moderately well at the box office, grossing around $44 million worldwide against a $20 million budget. Critics gave it mixed reviews, praising Woolard’s performance and the strong musical sequences, but noting that the film often stuck too closely to standard music-biopic formula. Produced by Sean “Diddy” Combs and Biggie’s mother Voletta Wallace, Notorious emphasized Biggie’s personal growth and legacy while steering clear of some of the grittier, more controversial aspects of his life. Still, it resonated with fans and helped reintroduce his story to a younger generation. While it didn’t garner major awards, it sparked renewed interest in 1990s hip-hop history and was praised for its authentic soundtrack and respect for Biggie’s cultural impact. Notorious remains a solid, emotionally resonant entry in the biopic genre, offering both tribute and cautionary tale about fame, loyalty, and the price of legend.
