Agum II ascended to the throne of the Kassites, ruling over a territory that spanned from Iran to the middle Euphrates. His reign marked a period of both diplomatic and military activity. Agum II maintained peaceful relations with Erishum III, the native king of Assyria, which was significant for regional stability. This diplomatic approach allowed him to focus on consolidating his power and addressing external threats. One of the notable military achievements during his reign was his conflict with the Hittite Empire. The Hittites had previously taken the sacred statue of Marduk, a significant religious artifact for the Kassites. Agum II's successful campaign against the Hittites culminated in the recovery of this statue, which he then proclaimed as equal to the Kassite deity Shuqamuna. This act not only restored a vital cultural symbol to the Kassite people but also reinforced Agum II's legitimacy and authority as a ruler.
